Memorial Day cleanup yields 680 lbs
PDM Promoters, Inc. conducted a rare non-Saturday cleanup this month when it spruced up Paseo de Marianas and its surrounding environs last Monday during Memorial Day.
Sonia Siwa, the non-profit’s coordinator, said PDM Promoters wasn’t able to do a Saturday cleanup this month because they were busy with the 21st Annual Taste of the Marianas International Food Festival & Beer Garden. Siwa and volunteers from Kinpachi Restaurant man a booth at the event.
“We were not able to do it on Saturdays, as we were busy with Taste of Marianas, but we did it last May 27, Memorial Day, as there were no classes for the kids who volunteer,” she said.
In all, 20 members from Saipan Awaodori Team and eight Kinpachi staff were able to haul 680 lbs of trash during the cleanup that began early at 9am.
Siwa said the area of the cleanup included Paseo de Marianas, Coral Tree Avenue, American Memorial Park Road, Beach Road, and their connecting alleyways.
“Having these young kids as volunteers, we want them to realize the importance of their contribution in keeping our surroundings’ clean. They will know that the small thing they’re doing can make a difference in our community. We are thankful to the parents/guardians of these children for allowing them to join us and giving their time for our monthly cleanups,” she added.
PDM Promoters’ cleanups are usually held Saturday and are supported by the Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality and the non-profit’s major sponsors, T Galleria and TSL Foundation.
Siwa said this enables them to have the cleaning materials they need. Kinpachi Restaurant provides the meal and snacks for the volunteers.
