MCS Theatre Club presents Tasi
After months of delays caused by Super Typhoon Yutu, Mount Carmel School’s Theatre Club is finally ready to present its next big musical, Tasi, an original musical about the Marianas featuring music from the island. The show will run on Thursday, Feb. 21, and Friday, Feb. 22, at Pacific Islands Club’s Charley’s Cabaret.
Inspired by Disney’s Moana, Tasi is an original story written by club adviser and school president, Galvin Deleon Guerrero. The story follows Tasi as she struggles between family expectations, traditions, and her own aspirations. The production will also feature music from and about the islands.
Tasi is being directed by Kalea Borja, who was the assistant director for 2017’s hit production of Disney’s Mulan Jr.
When asked why she stepped up to direct Tasi, Borja said she wanted to “present our local culture through it. I believe that we need to promote our local culture and embrace it, and surely Tasi is the play that can do just that!
“Just like our islands is #MarianasStrong in recovering from the typhoon, our cast and crew members have been Knight-strong in pushing through with the show,” she added.

In the show, Kina Dela Cruz will play the lead, titular role of Tasi. While Dela Cruz has acted in numerous shows over the years, this is her first lead role. While nervous, Dela Cruz is honored to play the role. “I really like that I get to represent my culture doing the things that I love about Theatre Club, singing, dancing, and acting.”
The show’s assistant director and club veteran, Brandee Hunter, is also very excited about the show. “So far, being an assistant director has been one of my favorite roles in a theatre production.” Hunter has acted in numerous past productions and has also served on the crew.
Looking ahead, Hunter said, “I feel nervous and excited at the same time for this show. …This play will be one of the best productions that the Theatre Club has ever done.”
Deleon Guerrero shares their excitement. “The show is full of very moving songs, wonderful dances, and top-notch acting. This is not a show to miss!”
Tasi is made possible by the support of IT&E and the Commonwealth Council for Arts and Culture. On Feb. 21 and 22, doors open at 6:30pm. Tickets are $25 for premium seats and $10 for general admission, available in the school’s business office. Due to very limited seating, advance purchase of tickets is highly recommended.
