This week, Mount Carmel School’s Theatre Club brings to the stage “For Realz,” an original dramatic comedy written by the club and directed by club veteran and 2015 AlumKnight Aysia Adele Rosalia Duenas Santos.
“For Realz” will simulate a reunion show for a fake reality TV show of the same name and follows the conflict between two rival girl cliques at a school. The production will focus on a number of issues that teen girls face on a daily basis: Cyberbullying, relationships, and suicide, to name a few.
It was important for Santos to address such issues. “I hope to raise awareness, especially with teen girls, because the stories we tell come from their lives.” She added, “I also hope that since the stories we tell reach some solutions, that it will also help others find solutions to their own problems.”
As a reunion special, the production will rotate back and forth between stage performances and film clips from the TV show, both of which were developed organically through improv exercises with the cast. Mount Carmel School president and Theatre Club advisor Galvin Deleon Guerrero said that the production’s innovative format was inspired by productions directed and produced by local author and dramatist, Barbara Sher. “Having worked with Barbara on similar productions, I was inspired to see if our students could pull off her realistic and semi-improvised approach to drama.”
“For Realz” will feature an ensemble cast of mostly freshmen and sophomores: Rosa Castro, Quina Flores, Angela Jun, Dayna Macaranas, Elyssa Mendez, Rosalia Pangelinan, Maria Terlaje, Monica Usi, and Theresa Zheng. The show will also feature a cameo appearance by 2006 AlumKnight, Theatre Club veteran, and school teacher John Del Rosario, who will play the show’s host.
“For Realz” is being presented as part of the Theatre Club’s 20th anniversary, and marks the club’s 39th production since its founding in 1996. The club will conclude its anniversary celebration with a rock musical adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” at the end of May.
“For Realz” will run this Thursday, April 28, and Friday, April 29, at Pacific Islands Club’s Charley’s Cabaret. Doors open at 6:30pm nightly. Admission is $10 admission and tickets may be purchased at the Mount Carmel School Business Office. Due to limited seating, advanced purchase of tickets is advised. Also, due to mature content and graphic language, adult discretion is advised.
A portion of the proceeds will go toward efforts to curb cyberbullying. The show is made possible by generous support from Tribe Marianas and Pacific Islands Club. For more information, call 234-6184 or visit www.mountcarmelsaipan.com. (PR)
