MCS senior takes part in JSA-Stanford program
This summer, Mount Carmel School’s upcoming senior Katherine “Kate” Avendano-Woodruff participated in the Junior Statesmen of America-Stanford Summer Program.
Due to safety measures regarding the pandemic, Woodruff participated in the virtual program along with other scholars across the United States and its territories. The program is expected to end on July 3, 2020.
JSA is a program that brings high school students to top universities in the U.S.—like Stanford, Princeton, and Georgetown—to take college-level courses relating to politics, from AP Government to speech to macroeconomics. Successful completion of courses typically translates to college credits for students. The program is also an opportunity for students to network with and learn from other like-minded students with interests in politics and government.
“We are incredibly proud of Kate and all our JSA Knights and AlumKnights, many of whom have gone on to serve our community. We trust that Kate will follow in their footsteps,” said MCS president Dr. Galvin Deleon Guerrero.
“The program is very enlightening,” said Avendano-Woodruff. “Although I am not participating face-to-face, I still had the chance to meet new people and hear different opinions on current issues. It’s a good experience that much can be learned from.”
The program is centered on developing leaders for change, while reflecting on how she can contribute in her community. “The program exposed me to seeing new perspectives on current issues and I feel that I’m better equipped to understand community concerns and address them logically and constructively,” said Avendano-Woodruff.
Avendano-Woodruff is one of many Mount Carmel School students who has participated in the JSA summer program. Many AlumKnights who have participated in the JSA program pursue professions centered around civil service.
