Mt. Carmel School marched into the finals of both the girls and boys high school divisions of the 2016-2017 Coalition of Private Schools Sports Association Volleyball League after surviving a pair of extended semis games yesterday at the MCS court in Chalan Kanoa.
MCS 1 first moved into the championship game in the girls division after outlasting MCS 2 in three sets. MCS 1 dropped the opening set, 17-25, but avoided the upset axe of its sister team after taking the last two sets, 25-15, 15-7.
With the close victory, the Lady Knights forced a finals rematch against Saipan International School. The Lady Geckos prevailed against Grace Christian Academy in the other semis game yesterday at the SIS court in As Lito. The Lady Eagles drew first blood, 25-22, before eventually losing the game when the Lady Geckos swept the last two sets, 25-13, 15-3.
The Lady Knights will go for the title defense today in the 3:30pm winner-take-all finale at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. Mt. Carmel downed SIS in last season’s championship game at the Whispering Palms School court, 25-15, 26-24.
In the boys division, MCS is hoping to get the title that eluded the team last year when they fell to SIS 1, 22-25, 13-25. The Knights earned a return trip to the finals after slipping past GCA in their semis showdown at the MCS court.
The MCS-GCA semis collision went the distance in the first set with the Knights pulling off a 27-25 victory, thanks to Seok Jun Yun’s back-to-back spikes. In the second set, MCS managed to gain cushion midway in the game, 15-12, before rain halted the team’s momentum. When the game resumed, the Knights were held to 2 points, allowing GCA to take a 25-17 victory and send the match into the deciding third set. In the final set, the Knights regrouped and posted a 15-11 win to eliminate the Eagles.
Mt. Carmel’s finals foe is Marianas Baptist Academy, which foiled a Knights-Geckos rematch after dethroning SIS in the other semis pairing in the boys division yesterday, 25-22, 25-18. The MCS-MBA title game will start at 4:30pm.
