Student directors in Mount Carmel School’s filmmaking class had the chance to showcase their work on the big screen this past week when the school held a film festival at Regal Cinemas this past week. The festival featured three films, directed by Keona Camacho, Poima Tarkong, and Justin Ocampo. Over 200 students were bused over to the theaters to watch the three films, as well as a Knightly News segment and a few other student films from the school’s film archives.

‘Why Me’ directed by Keona Camacho

Camacho’s film, “Why Me,” takes the audience into the dreams of a boy, played by Markel Toves, who is bullied on a daily basis. While he tends to find escape in his dreams, the film chronicles one dream that goes horribly wrong, leading the lead character to ask, “Why me?”

Camacho took great pains to ensure the film achieved her vision of combatting bullying. And despite several filmmaking challenges along the way, she was happy with how her film and all the films turned out. “I really liked all the films, especially from my filmmaking classmates.”

‘The Walk’ directed by Poima Tarkong

Tarkong’s film, “The Walk,” at first seems like a film about a stalker, played by Shannon Sasamoto, who follows a boy, played by Sophomore Don Castro. However, a plot twist towards the end of the film changes the whole perspective on the situation.
While Tarkong is a seasoned filmmaker who has made other student films in the past, she still found the process difficult. But that difficulty faded when the audience started laughing at the film. She likened it to creating life. “It’s kind of like giving a baby, it hurts, but once the baby comes out, everyone loves it.”

‘Prank’ directed by Justin Ocampo

Ocampo’s “Prank” throws a comic twist on a classic prank by elevating the ensuing conflict to an epic chase as the lead character, played by Lance Deleon Guerrero, pursues the film’s prankster, played by William Blake Deleon Guerrero.

While he faced his share of filmmaking challenges, Ocampo was very pleased with the final product. “I was so sucked into the film, that I barely noticed how the audience reacted to it.”
