Mount Carmel School will set aside its incoming education tax credit donations for scholarships and financial aids, according to newly appointed president Galvin Deleon Guerrero.

Starting Dec. 31 this year, all ETC contributions will go directly to the school’s scholarship fund, which hopes to raise $30,000 for both merit-based and need-based programs.

In addition to the ETC earmark, Deleon Guerrero also announced other initiatives intended to assist families financially.

The school’s registration fee-50 percent or more of which used to be paid upfront-can now be paid out over 12 months. Parents that have already paid all or half of the registration fee will have that payment credited toward their next tuition payment.

The grace period for late payments will also be extended from five days to 15 days. The school also committed to provide discounts to families that enroll more than one child at Mount Carmel School.

All these initiatives, according to Deleon Guerrero, reflect the school’s commitment to helping families.

“As a Catholic school, we must put into practice the teachings of the Church, namely helping those in need. If a family chooses a Catholic education for their child or children, we must do all that we can to make that choice viable,” said Deleon Guerrero.

This is the first time MCS will use education tax credit donations for scholarships.

According to the president, MCS offers numerous scholarships and assistance to about 20 students yearly. He expressed his intention to expand that number to provide more help to deserving students.

“On a yearly basis, MCS has offered scholarships and financial assistance to an average of 20 students. We’d like to expand that to 30 to 60,” he told Saipan Tribune.

Application forms for the scholarships and financial aid will be available at the school or from the school’s website, www.mtcarmel-edu.net, beginning Monday, July 23. For more information, email galvin.deleonguerrero@gmail.com.
