Mt. Carmel School’s Class of 1968 is preparing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their graduation on June 3, the day of their graduation, starting with a Thanksgiving Mass by Bishop Ryan A. Jimenez, at Mt. Carmel Cathedral at 9a.m.
According to class chair Rita Cabrera Guerrero, the year when they graduated from MCS, 1968, is a year that many will still recall as the year when one of the most powerful typhoon struck Saipan.
Despite the total destruction Super Typhoon Jean wrought on the Mt. Carmel campus in April 1968, the students were able to complete their class requirements under very challenging circumstances. There were no classrooms, books and other instructional materials, water, and power for several months. That year’s class yearbook depict the typhoon damage alongside the photos of the graduates and undergraduates. The community, especially the parents, the Mercedarian nuns, and U.S. Peace Corps volunteers helped rebuild the school.
Some members of the class visited with the graduating seniors in April of this year to share their experiences during and after their years at Mt. Carmel and to provide words of encouragement and support to the students as they prepare to pursue their individual dreams in life.
Over the years, the Class of 1968 embarked on several projects to help their alma mater such as reconstruction, fencing and landscaping of the Grotto shrine in October 1997 and providing four years of scholarships to seniors and eighth graders.
For 2018, the class will help install the lighting for the shrine of Mary, which is located by the administration building for the youth basketball, ballet classes, and other events held in evenings.
The entire Mount Carmel family is invited to join the Mass scheduled for June 3, 2018.
Updates for this event will be announced in the future. For more information, contact Guerrero at ritaguerrero@gmail.com or call 989-0885. (PR)
