MCS board raises teacher salaries; maintains tuition levels

At its annual meeting earlier this week, Mount Carmel School’s board of directors voted unanimously to raise the salaries of teachers by 15 percent, but did so without raising tuition. The salary increase comes just two years after the board raised salaries by about 2 percent. The last major salary increase before that was in 1998.

Board chair Joseph L. G. Taijeron expressed the school board’s commitment to the school and its teachers. “We are committed to investing in our teachers. I thank them for their patience and understanding as we continue to address MCS’s most pressing needs. A 15-percent raise is a step in the right direction and the second raise in the past two years, but we are not done.”

Taijeron also noted that the salary increase is part of the board’s efforts to help improve instructional quality at the school and meet accreditation standards  “The board is committed to doing whatever it takes to improve the quality of education at MCS.”

School president Galvin Deleon Guerrero was very happy with the board’s decision. “This helps us offer a much more competitive salary, which will help us recruit and retain great teachers.” He added, “Many of our teachers have given so much to the school for more than a decade; this increase honors their dedication in a very concrete and meaningful way.”

The salary increase was made possible by the school’s ability to increase enrollment, diversify revenue streams, and control expenses over the past two years. These steps taken not only improved the school’s financial situation but allowed the board to increase salaries without raising tuition.
