The extradition of a man who was arrested on Saipan last October for sexually assaulting a child in Illinois has been postponed.

Sean McDonnell’s extradition was originally set for last Monday, Dec. 18.

Saipan Tribune contacted chief prosecutor Michelle Harris, but she did not respond as of press time.

Saipan Tribune also contacted assistant public defender Nancy Dominski, counsel for McDonnell, on the non-execution of the extradition dated Dec. 18.

She said they have no statement to media at this point.

At the status conference presided over by Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho last Friday, chief prosecutor Michelle Harris and assistant attorney general Jonathan Wilberscheid informed the court that a company called Inmate Services will be arriving on Saipan, Dec. 18, to bring McDonnell back to Illinois.

Although the Dec. 18 scheduled extradition did not push through, McDonnell was given 45 days to be extradited from the CNMI to the state of Illinois starting Dec. 15, 2017.

Last Friday, assistant attorney general Jonathan Wilbersheid said that executing an extradition procedure in the CNMI is complicated because of the unavailability of flights.

But Wilbersheid assured the court that the extradition process will be executed appropriately.

Camacho stated in his order that in the event that McDonnel is not brought back to Illinios within 45 days, the court will hear arguments from the counsels of McDonnell whether or not he should be released from the Department of Corrections.

A status conference is set on Jan. 29, 2018 at 9am and Camacho ordered all parties to appear and if McDonnell has been extradited, the status conference shall be vacated.

McDonell was arrested through a joint effort between the U.S. Marshals and the Department of Public Safety, led by police sergeant George F. David, on Saipan last October.

McDonnell is wanted in the county of Rock Island in Illinois, on multiple charges of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.
