The Saipan Mayor’s Office is currently upgrading and revising its policies for sections under its office that generate revenue.

The office is now reviewing policies for the sections on marriage, municipality ID, Saipan Dog Control Program, and others.

According to the mayor’s special adviser, Henry Hofschneider, this will require the applicants to pay the required fees by themselves at the Guma Hustisia in Susupe.

“They have to come in with the receipt, and it has to be the original version of the receipt. That original copy, for example, will be provided to the marriage license [section] before the mayor signs the marriage license over,” Hofschneider said.

The Mayor’s Office earlier posted signs in June that the office does not accept payments for marriage fees due to an ongoing investigation that has yet to be resolved.

Hofschneider said the application process will continue the way it is.

Saipan Mayor Marian Tudela said that several of the procedures for applications are being revised.

“One of our staff has already shown me a revision of the application for the marriage section,” Tudela said.

She said this will help the operation run smoothly, with no concerns or complaints from any applicant.

Hofschneider said this will also put in more controls, protect the public, and stop any doubts on the mishandling of applications.

“All along, the Mayor’s Office has never been authorized to receive cash payments from any applicant,” Hofschneider said.

He said they will be working with the Division of Treasury and Office of the Commonwealth Recorder at Guma Hustisia.

He noted, though, that they have asked Gov. Eloy S. Inos about having a cashier at the Mayor’s Office. This would help do away with people going to another area to pay and then returning back to the Mayor’s Office.
