Mayor’s office to pick up stray dogs
The Saipan Mayor’s Office will once again be sweeping into villages to pick up stray dogs.
Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang said yesterday his office has two teams that will be picking up strays, particularly in villages that have a high number of complaints of roaming dogs. One team will work on the north side of Saipan while the other will be on the south side.
The operation will last from this month until May.
“Our staff will be doing the stray dog removal on each village for almost a week on all these villages so I urge the public to please tie your dogs because it is the law,” Apatang said.
He said this is in response to complaints of recent attacks by stray dogs.
“We’ve had a lot of complaints and it is all over the islands and we will concentrate on addressing the community’s concerns,” Apatang said.
From Feb. 9 to 20, the mayor’s team will visit Dandan and Garapan, followed by Koblerville and China Town from Feb. 23 to 26; San Antonio and Navy Hill from March 9 to 20; Chalan Kanoa and Puerto Rico from March 23 to April 3; Susupe and Tanapag from April 6 to April 17; San Jose and San Roque from April 20 to May 1; and Chalan Kiya and As Matuis from May 4 to May 15.
Based on a survey conducted by Humane Society International, these villages have high dog populations. There are a total of 12,300 stray dogs on Saipan, according to the survey.
