May intended to promote women’s health

Women usually have a harder time detecting health issues within themselves so the entire month of May has been designated to promoting women’s health.

During the Women’s Health Month proclamation signing, Margarita Torres-Aldan, Division of Public Health Services director, said it is important to promote women’s health because, in the current generation, women hold titles equivalent or even higher than their male counterparts, along with their roles as mothers and as wives. With this much responsibility, women tend to forget to take care of their mental and physical health.

“We are everywhere, that is why we are great caretakers of our loved ones…but we are not great caretakers of ourselves and we really need to start doing that. …When we take care of ourselves, that means everybody else will be kept healthy,” she said.

According to Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. CEO Esther Muña, free screening is offered at the Commonwealth Health Center so the initiative to get checked for any health issues should begin with women, which ties along with this year’s Women’s Health Month theme, “Begins With Me.”

Throughout the month, the Women’s Health Month committee has prepared event s and activities to encourage healthy living in women.

Today, Friday, the WHM committee will host a health outreach at the Nutritional Assistance Program office from 9am to 11:30am.

On Saturday, May 5, the WHM committee will host the 5K Walk, Roll, Run for Moms. The event will start at the Minachom Atdao. Registration will be at 6am and the walk will begin at 6:30am.

From May 7 to May 11, the WHM committee will host the Breastfeeding Boot Camp at the Pacific Islands Club Saipan from 8am to 5pm.

On May 16, May 23, and May 30 catch the WHM committee will be on the radio from 7:30am to 8:30am to discuss preventive care, gestational diabetes, tobacco use, healthy habits, physical activities, and more.

On May 17, May 25, and May 31 WHM will host a Village Health Outreach from 8:30am to 12pm.

On May 25, WHM will host the first Mom and Me talent show from 6pm to 9pm at the Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center.
