May busy month for LibDay candidates

The 29 candidates for the 2016 Miss CNMI Liberation Day Royal Court will have the month of May fully booked with activities as they continue their preparation for the July 1 coronation night. Five crowns, including the Royal Queen, are at stake in the competition.

Liberation Day Royal Court chair Rose Hocog said they are asking the Marianas Visitors Authority if they could get a tent set up in the four Saturdays of the Taste of the Marianas to sell tickets. The candidates also sold tickets in the 35th Flame Tree Arts Festival.

Hocog, in yesterday’s Liberation Day committee meeting held at the Saipan Mayor’s Office conference room, said that despite their trip to Rota being cancelled the candidates will be involved in Saturday’s American Red Cross Walkathon and the Agricultural Fair in June.

“Of course, these are separate from their continued training next month. May will be a crazy month for the candidates that’s why we’re going to ask [acting Northern Marianas College president] Dave Attao if we could use one of their classrooms for training.”

“We are also going to reach out to Guam if we can get a discount on our planned trip there and also if they could provide transportation to take the candidates around,” she added.

Hocog said most of the candidates, especially those who are graduating this year, have been busy with schoolwork for the finals with high school seniors also preparing for the prom. May will be NMC’s graduation month while June 1 for high schools.

She said that she would also schedule a meeting with the parents and guardians of the candidates in early May.

Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang said that they are also planning to have the 29 candidates perform as part of the entertainment program of the Liberation Day carnival.

“This a record number of candidates. As much as possible we want to have them enjoy their experience of being a candidate. We will treat them well and will make sure they will cherish their experience,” Apatang said.
