A total of 21 As Matuis and Susupe lots have changed classifications.

Eleven lots in As Matuis were reclassified from residential to tourist resort areas, while 10 lots in Susupe were reclassified from village residential to village commercial.

The reclassifications happened with the passage of Saipan Local Laws 20-05 and 20-06, signed into law by Lt. Gov. Victor B. Hocog, the acting governor at the time.

The rezoning of the lots allow for certain establishments such as resort hotels, shops, and other businesses to set up in these areas.

Rep. John Paul Sablan (R-Saipan), who authored two of the bills, said that the bills were enacted with the comments and recommendations of the Zoning board.

“In the Zoning law, every zone has restrictions and prohibitions. When you are in a village residential, you are not allowed to build a hotel, but in a village commercial, you are allowed to,” said Sablan, explaining that the point of the rezoning was to allow developers to come in that could help improve public infrastructures as well.

Sablan said the Zoning Office often receives numerous proposals from developers and investors.
