In keeping with the company’s commitment to support higher education, the Matson Navigation Company Scholarship Program recently awarded academic scholarships to three Northern Marianas College students.

Matson awards scholarships to three full-time NMC students pursuing a degree in either a bachelor’s in business management or an associate of science in accounting during each academic school year. The scholarships are awarded based on financial need, merit, eligibility, the content of the applicant’s essay, and an interview panel.

This was the company’s third donation of scholarships to NMC students.

The students who were selected to receive the Matson scholarships are Aysha P. Cabrera, Jimmy Blancia Jr., and Joyce M. Cuenca. The three recipients had undergone a highly competitive application process that included several essay requirements and a panel interview.

Blancia, Cabrera, and Cuenca are also first-year students studying in areas of business. Both Cabrera and Cuenca are business management majors with a focus on accounting, and Blancia is a double major in natural resource management and business management.

“We are extremely grateful for Matson Navigation Company’s continued support of Northern Marianas College students, especially during this recovery period after Super Typhoon Yutu,” said NMC interim president Frankie Eliptico. “We look forward to working with them to help ensure that financial and academic opportunities are expanding for our students.”

The purpose of the Matson Navigation Company Scholarship is threefold: 1) To promote higher education by providing financial assistance for college students in their pursuit of professional careers; 2) to help alleviate the critical current and future shortage of skilled and trained workforce for the CNMI; and 3) to provide current public and private sector employees with opportunities to improve their knowledge and skills, and enhance their career and professional development.
