Matansa Football Club foiled Paire’s bid for a season-debut win, eking out a 1-0 victory in the final game of the night in the 2014 NMIFA Women’s League last Saturday at the Oleai Sports Complex Field.
Kelsey Lizama scored the lone goal in the game midway in the second half to hand Paire a loss in its first game of the season. Paire drew a bye in the opening week of the 11 versus 11 league last March 22, while Matansa absorbed a 0-1 defeat at the hands of Independents FC.

Two more matches were played in Week 2 of the seven-team field with Kanoa FC notching an easy win and MP United and Shirley’s Football Club settling for a draw.

Shirley’s and MP United played in the curtain-raiser and were in a deadlock, 1-all, after the 90 minutes of play. Each team tallied one goal in the first half with Michelle Masga scoring for MP United and Negahr Rastguiy delivering the game-tying goal.

With the tie, Shirley’s missed the win column, as it dropped its opener to Kanoa FC, 1-5. MP United failed to get its second win after a 6-1 rout of Tan Holdings FC in Week 1.

While MP United’s bid for a 2-0 record fell short, Kanoa FC achieved its goal after shutting down Independents FC, 4-0. Marielle Gariguez and Lalaine Pagarao drilled a pair of goals in Kanoa FC’s domination of IFC. The duo alternately hit their targets with Gariguez scoring first and Pagarao giving Kanoa its second goal. Gariguez found the back of the net anew in the closing minutes of the first half to lift her team to a 3-0 halftime lead. Pagarao then duplicated Gariguez’s feat with a conversion midway in the second frame.

Meanwhile, action in the women’s spring league will continue tomorrow with Kanoa going for win No. 3 against MP United in the last game of the weekend at 8pm. In the first match, Shirley’s FC and Paire FC vie for their first victory as they collide at 4pm, while Tan Holdings FC duels Matansa in the second tiff at 6pm.
