Masons present Venus with plaque
The Emon Masonic Lodge No. 179 presented longtime basketball organizer and referee Abner Venus a plaque of appreciation last May 28 at his residence in Finasisu.
“Venus has been a big help to the Emon Lodge Basketball league as league organizer, dating from 2010 to 2014,” said Emon Masonic Lodge No. 179 worshipful master Bong Malasarte.
In a Facebook post, Venus expressed surprised at the visit and thanked the Emon Masonic Lodge for the award.
He wished the Emon Masonic Lodge the best in their future events, and hopes that they are able to form and organize more basketball leagues.
Venus is well known for his contributions to the sport of basketball on the islands.
Venus is one of the founders of the Basketball Association of the Northern Mariana Islands and served as BANMI president from 1992 to 1994. He is one of the founders of the BANMI Referees Association and served as a table official and referee during his time with BANMI.
Venus organized numerous leagues during his time with BANMI. He also coached many teams, most notably the Toyota Wheels.
Venus also served as a member of the Mariana Islands Basketball Federation or MIBF and was awarded an MIBF appreciation plaque in 2017.
Venus retired from officiating and organizing basketball leagues in 2015.
