Marshalls gets $8.9M in Compact payments
WASHINGTON, D.C. —The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs recently released to the government of the Republic of the Marshall Islands’ U.S. Compact grant payments for October totaling $8,986,600.
Some $8.6 million is for Kwajalein Impact and Use Payment for the first quarter; $370,000 will go to the Enewetak Food & Agriculture Program.
As provided for under Section 212 of the Compact of Free Association, the United States provides payments for military use and operating rights on Kwajelein Island and Atoll. Also under the Enewetak Food & Agriculture program, the U.S. continues to assist a community affected by the U.S. nuclear testing program of the 1940s by providing supplemental food for the people of Enewetak, replanting vegetation on the inhabited islands, conducting agricultural maintenance training and transporting food supplies.
Compact grants provided by the United States to the Marshall Islands are managed through the bilateral Joint Economic Management Finance and Accountability Committee meetings between the U.S. government and the Marshall Islands government. (DOI)
