The Marianas participated in 21th Annual Nippon Dommanaka Festival in Nagoya, Japan on Aug. 23-25, 2019, with a delegation of indigenous Carolinian and Chamorro dancers supported by Marianas Visitors Authority and Pacific Development Inc.

The festival featured approximately 20,000 dancers from throughout Japan, with a few international special performances, including The Marianas. The Marianas delegation also included 2019 Liberation Day Queen Pernalynn Camacho, 2019 Miss Earth Leisha Deleon Guerrero (who also met with the director of Nagoya Bureau of Environment), MVA director Warren Villagomez, MVA managing director Priscilla M. Iakopo, and chair Bridget Maratita of the 2019 Liberation Day Royal Court Committee, and other individuals from The Marianas now living in Japan.

At Nagoya City Civic Reception House on Aug. 23, the delegation attended a welcoming reception hosted by Nagoya Mayor Takashi Kawamura and supporting council members and business representatives.

“It’s an honor for our Marianas Domannaka team to be invited each year to participate as a special guest in the Nippon Dommanaka Festival,” said Iakopo. “The team was a crowd favorite!”

During the festival, the group performed at Hisaya-odori main stage, Pepsi Kiboh-no- izumi Park, Otsu Street Parade, and Yaba Koen Park and walked in the festival parade. The MVA’s office in Japan coordinated the team’s participation. (PR)
