Marianas Film Festival launch brings global attention

The world’s attention was on Shanghai last June 24 when the Marianas International Film Festival was launched at the Crowne Plaza Shanghai Hotel.
It was a glitzy ceremony, with a bevy of film directors, celebrities, producers and industry players attending and supporting film festival.
The festival’s first award ceremony will be held on Dec. 6 on Saipan.
Attending the kickoff ceremony were Yang Bu Ting, chairman of the China Film Group Corp. and honorary chairman of the Marianas International Film Festival; Kim Dong Ho, former secretary of Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, founder of the Busan International Film Festival, and co-chairman of Marianas International Film Festival; Max Borenstein, a famous Hollywood screenwriter, director, and producer; Kimberley Kates, a well-known Hollywood producer and actor, and representatives of Imperial Pacific International Ltd.
Representing the CNMI were Lt. Gov. Victor B. Hocog and Marianas Visitors Authority managing director Christopher A. Concepcion.
Also in attendance were Ng See Yuen, president of the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers, honorary chairman of the Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild, and chairman of the Marianas International Film Festival; Li Qian Kuan, former chairman of the China Film Association, librarian of Central Literature and History Museum, and the co-chairman of the Marianas International Film Festival; Xi Mei Juan, vice chair of China Film Association and a performing artist; and Hung Kam Po, a Hong Kong film director and actor.
These respected industry players were joined by a throng of international media that witnessed the birth of the Marianas International Film Festival.
Awards setting
The Marianas International Film Festival is set to promote the idea of unity, harmony, and world peace. As a new film festival, the Marianas International Film Festival places great importance on originality.
A list of awards will be presented in December, which includes the award for best picture; grand jury prize; best director; best screenplay; best actor; best actress; best supporting actor; best supporting actress; best cinematography; best film editing; best technical achievement; best original song; best new director and best new actor/ actress, etc.
The festival is also designed to support young filmmakers, with a panel of judges to screen the best film created by young filmmakers.
International filmmakers will be invited to join the various film exhibitions, seminars and forum during the film festival.
About the festival
The Marianas International Film Festival is jointly sponsored by Imperial Pacific International Holdings Ltd. and Marianas Visitors Authority, among others.
Only the finest quality films will be shown at the film festival.
Organizers are expecting this to be another major international festival, following best-known film festivals such as the Cannes Film Festival and Venice Film Festival.
It is being reported that famous entertainment and movie industry players and celebrities are set to visit and participate in the Dec. 6 awards ceremony on Saipan. (PR)
