Marianas congressional art competition now open
Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP) is inviting high school students in the CNMI to create art and submit their work for a chance to have their art displayed at the U.S. Capitol for one year alongside artwork from other contest winners nationwide.
The deadline for submissions to the Marianas Congressional Art Competition is May 4, Wednesday.
Students must submit original artwork and completed student release form to the congressional district office on Saipan, Tinian, or Rota before 5pm on Wednesday, May 4.
Sablan said in his Facebook post that he is looking “forward to seeing your creative work.”
Artwork eligibility will be based upon originality in concept, design, and execution. The art must be two-dimensional in form through these accepted mediums: paintings, drawings, collages, prints, mixed media, computer generated art, and photographs. All artwork must be suitable for public display.
“Since the competition began in 2009, millions of people have seen the acclaimed work of the Northern Marianas’ talented young artists,” Sablan said last year. “I encourage students to showcase their work to the world and discover something new about themselves along the way.”
According to Sablan’s Facebook page, the Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition.
