Mariana Stamp and Coin Club to hold first meeting tomorrow

The CNMI’s newly established Mariana Stamp and Coin Club will be having its first ever meeting tomorrow at the Joeten Kiyu Public Library in Susupe at 10am.

Founder Steven Connor wanted to provide a venue for members of the community who are interested in these kinds of collections.

“We’re looking for people who have a general interest in stamps and coins,” Connor said, “Maybe they have an old collection that was given to them by their parents, they don’t know if it has any value, they don’t know what it is, they can come and we can talk about it.”

MSCC is a non-profit organization, which Connor founded as a kind of outreach to the community.

“I started thinking of how to contribute to the community and I thought this may be something that we can glean some history from,” Connor said.

On the agenda of their first meeting is getting members on board and voting for officers. Aside from monthly meetings on Saipan, Connor is also looking at holding quarterly meetings on Tinian and Rota, especially because these places have rich postal history as well.

Connor is a retired USAF employee and has been living on Saipan since last year. He has been collecting stamps and coins since he was young.

“I’ve been a lifelong stamp collector. I’ve been collecting stamps since I got a Boy Scout stamp and coins I’ve always collected coins,” he said.

Connor also wants the public, especially the younger generations, to know about the benefits of using postal mails in light of what happened recently to the CNMI’s fiber optic cable.

“The young today, with all the emails going along, they have no concept of what it takes to mail a letter. They just don’t know the capabilities and benefits they have. So that’s part of the community outreach, understanding and increasing awareness of this benefit,” he said.
