Mariana Resort & Spa finished pool play with an unblemished record following a 122-86 demolition of Westco in the lone game in the JEM Company Ltd./Mobil Customer Appreciation Basketball League last Friday at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium.
With its 7-0 sweep of Pool B of the 16-team league, Mariana Resort gets the top seeding in the crossover single-elimination playoffs and will face Pool A last finisher Triple J in the first round.
Three Mariana Resort players scored at least 20 points each to hand Westco a beating in its last game in pool play. Jun Fidelino was one of them, making 23 points, while Melvin Sakisat Jr. and J.R. Lifoifoi chipped in 22 and 20 markers, respectively. Two more Mariana Resort players scored in twin digits with Sandrew Kani logging 15 and Carlo Prado posting 10.
Marianas Resort’s offensive prowess, fired up by its much younger players, proved to be too much for the veteran crew of Westco.
Westco tried to keep up with Mariana Resort in scoring and was a bit successful in the first quarter, as the former only led by 7 points, 31-24. However, Mariana Resort padded the lead as the game progressed and this time Westco failed to counter.
Mariana Resort drilled four triples in the second quarter and Fidelino dropped 9 of his total points in the period, lifting his team to a 59-41 halftime lead. Fidelino was still unstoppable in the second half, which he started with back-to-back triples and the former Marianas High School standout went on to add 14 more points in the third for Mariana Resort’s commanding 87-63 advantage.
Fidelino was then silent in the fourth, but Mariana Resort did not mind, as Sakisat and J.R. Lifoifoi took over and delivered the killer blows en route to their 36-point winning margin.
Meanwhile, Docomo Pacific ended its five-game losing skid after winning via forfeit against Commonwealth Utilities Corp. (3-4). Docomo (2-5) is ranked seventh in Pool and will likely face Coca-Cola/Subway (5-1) in the first round of the playoffs.
