Marchadesch, Camacho are ‘Taste’ champs
The second night of the 20th Annual Taste of the Marianas last Saturday was highlighted by a barbecue cook-off competition won by the team of Spencer Marchadesch and Joel Camacho.
Six pairs went head-to-head in the battle to win the bragging rights to Taste’s best barbecue.
The bragging rights, a brand new Samsung S7 with a three-month plan from IT&E, and a $300 gift certificate redeemable at any Joeten store was awarded to Marchadesch and Camacho.
According to Camacho, he was only informed of the competition three days before the cook-off and he immediately decided to team up with his cousin, Marchadesch, who dominated the same competition at the 19th Annual Taste of the Marianas.
“He [Marchadesch] is a genius as a cook,” said Camacho.
Camacho said that Marchadesch came up with the idea to represent Taste of the Marianas by incorporating local taste into their winning sauce. The concoction consisted of carabao mangoes, locally grown soursop, and Saipan Brewing beer.
“Both the sugar and the acidity…ended up working well together and the mixture was great…the beer was also Saipan-made,” he said.
Last year, Marchadesch wowed the judges with his sauce that consisted of mainly local mangoes.
In second place was team Mama’s Love, and completing the top three was team Sugar and Spice.
