Gov. Ralph DLG Torres proclaimed March as “Development Disabilities and Employment Awareness Month” to recognize that local communities are stronger when “everyone participates.” Torres encourages people to get to know someone with a disability, recognize their ability at work, and see what she or he has to offer.
Torres attended a conference of the CNMI’s Disability Network to sign the proclamation yesterday morning and called people with disabilities one of the most overlooked work forces in the community.
The proclamation says the theme for the awareness month is “Ability at Work.”
The CNMI Council on Development Disabilities, the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation and the Disability Network invites the community to “consider the true meaning” of the this month’s theme.
“‘Ability at work’ encourages people to understand that when people with disabilities are welcomed into local neighborhoods, workplaces, houses of worship, and schools everyone wins,” the proclamation states.
The proclamation urges the employment of qualified individuals with disabilities, maximize opportunities for skills training, break down barrier that prevent integration and full inclusion, and embrace the talents people with disabilities bring to the table.
