March was designated American Red Cross Month yesterday in a proclamation signing at the Office of the Governor’s conference room on Capital Hill.
Lt. Gov. Arnold I. Palacios, who signed the proclamation, said the occasion honors the American Red Cross-NMI Chapter’s staff, volunteers, and supporters for their dedication, hard work, and constant help to those in need during disasters and other hard times.
“Red Cross is the Red Cross because of the people in this community. And without every single person here in the CNMI, the Red Cross would not be able to do what it does best. And that’s providing support to those that need it during times of disasters, but also to help prevent a lot of these disasters,” said Tayna Belyeu-Camacho.
ARC-NMI Chapter executive director John Hirsch thanked the board members of the local organization and the government, the Legislature, and federal partners such as Federal Emergency Management Agency, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Defense, Commonwealth Guidance Center, Commonwealth Cancer Coalition, Saipan Chamber of Commerce, the military family, and so many others who took time out to help ARC recognize this important day.
“We are very grateful for the overwhelming response that we receive day in and day out from our donors, our community members, and our government partners. Un dongkulu na si yu’us ma’ase, oluumway for your support, thank you.” Belyeu-Camacho added.
Walkathon postponed
Hirsch also announced yesterday that the annual ARC Walkathon will be postponed this year.
The event is usually held on the month of April but, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the organization has decided to postpone it until further notice for the community’s safety.
“So we are, in the abundance of caution, going to push back our walkathon because it involves 3,000 children in one place, one time, and we just felt that by the end of April is probably not a good idea. But stay tuned,” said Hirsch.
Dedicating the month of March to the American Red Cross also fits with all the women that volunteer for the ARC because International Women’s Day was also celebrated last March 8. (Krizel Tuazon)
