Acting governor Victor B. Hocog signed a proclamation declaring March as American Red Cross Month last Wednesday on Capital Hill. The proclamation honors ARC volunteers, especially the NMI Chapter.

The proclamation is the best time to recognize ARC volunteers and thank everyday heroes for their contribution to the community.

“We have a long history of helping our neighbors in need in the CNMI. [The proclamation recognizes] ARC volunteers and donors who give of their time and resources to help community members in the CNMI,” states part of the proclamation.

ARC volunteers help find shelter for families after a home fire, donate blood for trauma victims and cancer patients, use their lifesaving skills to save a person who is suffering from a heart attack, drowning or choking, and facilitate the vaccination of kids against measles and rubella.

The proclamation applauds the local heroes who selflessly give their time and effort in assisting people during disasters or anyone who needs a helping hand. “The [ARC] depends on local heroes to deliver help and hope during a disaster.”

ARC responds to disasters all over the world. Every 80 minutes the organization provides shelter, food, emotional support, and other needs of those affected.

The ARC also collects 40 percent of the nation’s blood supply; gives 24-hour support to members of the armed forces, veterans, and their respective families; conducts lifesaving skills training like being a lifeguard, and performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other first aid; and connects family members separated by crisis, conflict or migration through its restoring family links program.

March is dedicated to all ARC volunteers and those who support the organization’s mission to prevent and alleviate human suffering during times of emergencies or disasters.

“Our community depends on the [ARC], which relies on donations of time, money, and blood to fulfill its humanitarian mission,” said the proclamation.
