Man’amkó King and Queen Coronation marks end of Older American’s Month
The Saipan Seniors Advisory Council crowned their new Man’amkó King and Queen to cap the celebration of Older American’s Month in May.
Hailed king for this year was Diego Pua, while Minerva Maghanoy was crowned queen.
Maghanoy said she joined the annual pageant to help and give back to the man’amkó.
“I’ve been in the man’amkó for the last two years so it’s just but fitting to give back,” Minerva said. “I am grateful to all who supported the 2015 Man’amkó King and Queen Fundraising.”
Pua hopes to further help the man’amkó with various activities.
“I really want to help them. I want the man’amkó to be healthy. My responsibility as king now is to do activities that will help them,” Pua said.
Winners were based on sales of raffle tickets that help fund the man’amkó’s activities.
SSAC president Maria Salinas was happy with the turnout of the event.
“This is the best ever activity for the man’amkó. Everybody’s heart was in this,” Salinas said.
“We have our [new] royal court, the outgoing royal court, so we all got together and we had a big, big, big fun,” she added.
The coronation ball at the Pacific Islands Club Saipan last May 30 served as the culmination of the monthlong celebration. However, for Aging Director Walter Manglona, honoring the man’amkó should continue.
“Older Americans Month mainly focuses on just being able to honor the senior citizens, but it should not end just because Older Americans Month is over,” Manglona said. “That should continue all the time. We encourage everybody to continue to respect the elderly and to also get them involved in the community.”
