The Saipan Fil-American Lions Club celebrated its Worldwide Week of Service for Sight by giving away free reading glasses to the Aging Center yesterday. The glasses varied from grades +0.75 to +4.0 and were distributed by Lions Club members.

Attending the event were Saipan Fil-American Lions Club president Annamae Adaza, Lions Club zone chair Mario Mayuga, Lions Club regional chair Ladyvir Canape, Office on Aging director Walter Manglona, and Man’amko Council president Rita Reyes.

Adaza said: “It feels good to be a part of an organization that’s really worldwide in terms of community service. For us, we’re just trying to help the CNMI in our own little ways. As our motto says: ‘We serve’ so that’s what we’re doing.”

Adaza has been a member of the Lions Club for six years now.

Manglona thanked Adaza and her group for the donation of reading glasses. “We are always blessed and appreciative to have groups in the community…spending their time to come over here and make contributions to our elderly.”

Manglona has been working with the Office on Aging for over 14 years, about four years as its director.

One man’amko, Maria Salinas, said, “I think it is very generous that they’re [Lions Club] is doing this because, believe it or not, at this age the man’amko really do need reading glasses. They wouldn’t know it, but they do need them.”

The Lions Club was able to distribute 143 reading glasses to the man’amko in the center as well as its staff. Other than local community projects, the Lions Club is also preparing to celebrate its 100th year of establishment from June 30 to July 4 in Chicago’s international convention. (Michael Santos)
