Typhoon Man-Yi, previously known as Tropical Storm Man-Yi, no longer threatens the Marianas.

Tropical Storm Man-Yi became a typhoon Wednesday night. Fortunately for the Marianas, due to a change in course, Man-Yi no longer poses a threat.

As of 2pm yesterday, acting governor Victor B. Hocog cancelled all tropical storm conditions for Rota, although the all-clear was not expected until 5pm.

Although conditions were cancelled, CNMI residents still experienced strong gusty winds and heavy rain throughout the day yesterday.

According to a bulletin from the CNMI Homeland Security, at 1pm yesterday, the center of Typhoon Man-Yi was located just below the state of Yap.

Man-Yi was seen moving quickly to the west-northwest at 26 mph and is expected to maintain this motion before turning to the northwest and slowing down today.

Man-Yi’s maximum sustained winds have increased to 85 mph. Additional intensification is forecasted through this morning when it is expected to reach its peak intensity of about 110 mph.

Typhoon force winds extend outward from the center up to 40 miles, except out to 10 miles to the southwest. Tropical storm force winds extend outward from the center up to 145 miles, except out to 65 miles to the southwest.

The CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point will be monitoring the movement of Typhoon Man-Yi and will be issuing out bulletins as they become available. Residents of the Marianas are encouraged to keep a close watch on updates to weather forecasts and stay informed on the latest statements and advisories that will be available through local media.
