Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo has imposed a one-year-and-six-month prison term on a 38-year-old man who hit a then 17-year-old male student in the head with a vodka bottle, causing serious injuries.

In a written order issued yesterday, Govendo directed Geoffrey Steve Ada to report to the Department of Corrections on June 22, 2012, to start serving the jail sentence.

Ada will be released on Dec. 22, 2013, and will be placed on supervised probation for a year and six months.

He was also required to pay restitution in the amount to be determined by the Office of Adult Probation, a $1,000 fine, plus court costs and probation fees.

The Office of the Attorney General had charged Ada with assault and battery, criminal mischief, and two counts of disturbing the peace. He pleaded guilty to all charges as part of a plea deal.

According to the prosecution, Ada, in a fit of rage, hit the 17-year-old victim in the head with a vodka bottle and then punched him several times on Oct. 10, 2010.

The victim did not fight back but attempted to block Ada’s strikes. The glass from the bottle cut the victim’s right hand.

The wound on the right hand required stitches and his injuries caused him to miss two weeks of school. Four months after the incident, the victim’s right hand could not grasp things properly. The victim still suffers severe weekly headaches due to the blow to the head, according to the OAG.
