A 22-year-old man who was pulled over for a traffic violation fled, nearly running over another officer.

Manuel Weilbacher Norita was served with an arrest warrant on Friday afternoon in Kagman III on charges of obstructing justice, assault with a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest, and fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer. His bail was kept yesterday at $15,000 cash.

Preliminary hearing will be on July 7 at 9am. Assistant public defender Cindy Nesbit was appointed as his lawyer.

Police said that patrol officer Joannalyn Laniyo was along Isa Drive and passing by the Kagman Mobil traffic signal light on Tuesday at 8:44pm when she noticed a pickup truck running a red light while making a left turn toward Kagman Road.

Laniyo initiated a traffic violator stop. As she was writing a traffic citation near the back of Norita’s car, Norita reversed, almost colliding with the patrol car.

Lt. Anthony Macaranas arrived to assist Laniyo. He approached Norita’s truck and repeatedly hit the driver side window and shouted at Norita to stop the vehicle. Norita continued to back up, nearly running over Macaranas. He then fled the scene.

Another police officer pursued Norita, who proceeded to his house in Kagman. Several other officers arrived at the house. Norita was later arrested.
