A 41-year-old man accused of burning papers, throwing $250 into a fire, and threatening to burn his family at their home in the Koblerville Turnkey Housing pleaded guilty on Wednesday in the Superior Court and was slapped with a one-year prison term.

Jesse Billy Mailuw Jr., 41, pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace and assault (domestic violence) as part of a plea deal.

Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho sentenced Mailuw to six months each for disturbing the peace and assault. Mailuw will spend a total of one year in prison without the possibility of parole. He was given credit for 205 days of time served. He was ordered to pay $25 in court costs.

The judge directed the CNMI clerk of court to fax or provide a copy of his judgment and order to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security-Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Mailuw is a citizen of the Federated States of Micronesia.

The Office of the Attorney General originally charged Mailuw with disturbing the peace, assault, and child abuse or neglect.

On Wednesday, assistant attorney general Jonathan Glass Jr., counsel for the government, dropped the charge of child abuse or neglect.

According to police, on April 9, 2016 on Saipan, Mailuw threw burning papers at his wife and their infant son and threatened to burn them.

There were no serious injury and the victim did not require medical assistance. The OAG said the victim supports the plea deal.
