Man in a sham marriage gets 1-day sentence
Md. Shahadat Hossain, a Bangladeshi man who pleaded guilty in connection with a sham marriage case, was sentenced to a one-day prison term in federal court Tuesday afternoon.
U.S. District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Ramona V. Manglona gave the 45-year-old Hossain credit for time served.
Hossain was placed on one year of supervised release. Among the conditions of his supervised release is that he shall serve 50 hours of community service, pay a $100 special assessment fee, and shall be deported.
Michael N. Evangelista, court-appointed counsel for Hossain, said his client wishes to leave the Commonwealth as soon as possible. Evangelista recommended a sentence of time served.
Assistant U.S. attorney Ross Naughton recommended a sentence of probation or time served.
Manglona granted the prosecution’s motion to dismiss the remaining charges against Hossain.
The defendant signed a plea deal with the U.S. government in June and pleaded guilty to lying to federal authorities. Hossain lied to Homeland Security Investigations special agents when he said he lived with his then-wife, Rosita Hossain, since December 2011.
