Man safely exits burning car in Garapan
A man managed to get out of his car just before it became engulfed in flames in Garapan on Tuesday night.
The driver sustained no injuries, according to Department of Public Safety Fire Division spokesperson Jocelyn Alvarez.
Alvarez said the vehicle, a Toyota MR2, was badly burned and had to be towed away.
Alvarez said fire investigator Anthony Babauta indicated that although the cause of the blaze has yet to be determined, they are looking into mechanical issues as a possible cause.
DPS Fire Division received an emergency call for a possible vehicle on fire by the northern entrance to the MIHA Housing across the Century Hotel at 9:54pm.
A rescue unit, the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and high-yield Explosives, arrived at the scene at 9:56pm, but did not find the car’s driver in the area.
A fire engine from San Roque Fire Station arrived at 10:02pm and extinguished the blaze five minutes later.
Alvarez said the information gathered indicates that the driver was exiting the MIHA Housing area when he heard a “pop” sound from behind his car. When he looked into the rearview mirror, he saw what appeared to be sparks and flames. He then exited the car to look for assistance and returned to the scene at 10pm.
CBRNE is not a water equipped vehicle.
Alvarez said CBRNE responds to all hazard materials, suppression, and any vehicle-related calls as it carries the heavy equipment used for vehicle extrication, medical/trauma equipment and additional equipment needed for suppression incidents.
