Police arrested on Thursday a man who allegedly sexually abused a 7-year-old girl at a residence in Chalan Kanoa.

Leonardo Lindo Jr. was arrested for sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree.

Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo on Friday imposed a $25,000 cash bail for the defendant’s temporary liberty.

There was no testimony or allegations that the defendant sexually assaulted the girl, thus the charge is sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree.

The defendant was taken to court for Gerstein hearing on Friday.

Gerstein hearing is conducted when the arrest of a suspect is done without an arrest warrant. In this proceeding, the judge will determine if there is probable cause to continue to detain the defendant.

Assistant attorney general Nicole Driscoll appeared for the government at the hearing. Assistant public defender Benjamin Petersburg served as counsel for the defendant.
