A 38-year-old man was struck and killed during a hit-and-run incident involving a sports utility vehicle at the intersection of Chalan Pale Arnold Road and As Mahetog near the Saipan Ice and Water Co. Sunday night.

The victim, a local Chinese, sustained several injuries and was pronounced dead by an attending physician at the Commonwealth Health Center at 9:45pm, according to Department of Public Safety spokesperson Jacqueline Rae Shepard.

Shepard said the incident is still under investigation, but police located the driver yesterday.

“Investigators believe alcohol as a determining factor in the case,” Shepard said.

Investigation showed that on Sunday at 6:53pm, a caller notified DPS dispatch of an auto-pedestrian collision near Saipan Ice and Water Co.

Police learned that the incident occurred in the southbound shoulder of Chalan Pale Arnold Road.

When police officers and Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services medics arrived at the scene, they found the victim, who was lying unconscious in the driveway of the water company.

Medics transported the victim to CHC emergency room at 7:06pm.

Shepard said according to a witness, a green SUV struck the victim, but the driver did not stop and instead continued driving toward the south direction.

The SUV made a left turn on Mihaville in Garapan.

The witness was able to get the vehicle’s license plate and provided the police with the suspect’s descriptions.

Shepard said police located the SUV seven hours later.

The victim is the first traffic fatality in the CNMI this year.
