Man gets probation for destruction of government property
The U.S. District Court for the NMI has sentenced a man to probation after he pleaded guilty to destruction of government property.
During a sentencing hearing last Friday, Chief Judge Ramona Manglona sentenced Jonathan Natura, a Philippine national, to six months of probation on the grounds of willful depredation of government property.
Natura, who admitted to destroying the cable and internet connection of the Homeland Security Investigations’ office on Saipan in May 2020, must also pay a fine of $200 plus a special assessment fee of $25 before the end of his probation period.
In the sentencing memorandum filed by Natura’s lawyer, Robert Torres, he said Natura deserves to serve a probation sentence of less than or up to one year because of his honesty.
After splicing the internet and cable line that provided service to the Department of Homeland Security office, Natura immediately admitted that he was responsible when Docomo Pacific came to check the line the following morning.
“Natura, in the morning when Docomo technicians came to service the line, admitted immediately that he had spliced the line. It is apparent that Natura’s character and his radical honesty have merited substantial consideration in his favor. He stated the truth, he stood up, and did so despite the debilitating shame and embarrassment that accompanies the admission,” Torres said.
“Natura is a good man who committed an unnecessary act with tampering and the depredation of the property of the United States,” Torres added.
According to court documents, back in May of this year, Natura pleaded guilty to one count of willful depredation of government property.
