Man gets 30-month prison term for selling ‘ice’
The federal court has imposed a 30-month prison term against Bao Zhong Wang, who pleaded guilty to distribution of methamphetamine or “ice.”
At a sentencing hearing on Monday afternoon, U.S. District Court for the NMI Senior Judge Alex R. Munson gave Wang credit for time served.
Munson recommended to the Bureau of Prisons that Wang be made to participate in a substance abuse treatment program.
Upon completion of his prison term, Wang will be placed on three years of supervised release.
Among the conditions of the supervised release is that Wang shall be turned over to an immigration official for deportation.
Wang will be required to perform 100 hours of community service, pay a $100 special assessment fee after sentencing, and forfeit to the U.S. government the proceeds of the sale of “ice” in the amount of $1,350.
Assistant U.S. attorney Ross Naughton recommended a 30-month prison sentence, which is the low end of the sentencing guidelines. Court-appointed defense counsel Steven Pixley also recommended the same.
Munson granted the U.S. government’s motion to dismiss the remaining charge as part of the defendant’s plea deal with the prosecution.
Wang was remanded into the custody of the U.S. Marshal.
In May 2014, Wang pleaded guilty to distribution of methamphetamine as part of a plea deal with the U.S. government.
The offense carries a maximum penalty of a 20-year prison term and a $1 million fine.
According to the factual basis of the plea agreement, on Nov. 27, 2012, Wang, 46, sold 4.7 grams of 97.4 percent pure methamphetamine to a confidential source for the Drug Administration in exchange for $1,350.
Wang was arrested in February 2014.
