An unidentified man died, while a male teenager was taken to the hospital for near drowning in separate incidents at Smiling Cove Marina and Sugar Dock on Sunday.

Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services spokesman Derek Gersonde said the dead person was described as from the Federated States of Micronesia.

Gersonde said the teenager, who is a Chinese national, was taken to the Commonwealth Health Center’s emergency room.

Gersonde said DFEMS received a call on Sunday at 4:40pm from an unidentified male caller, stating he needed an ambulance at the American Memorial Park.

Medics from the Garapan Fire Station responded and came upon the patient at Smiling Cove Marina at 4:45pm.

Emergency medical technicians observed the patient was conscious but showing signs of respiratory distress. As they were checking him, the patient’s condition deteriorated—he lost his pulse and was no longer breathing. EMTs performed cardio-pulmonary resuscitation until they arrived at CHC.

At CHC’s emergency room, CPR was continued. At 5:15pm, a doctor pronounced the patient dead. The cause of death was not mentioned in the report.

Gersonde said there was no information as to what happened to the person.

In the other case, DFEMS received a call from an unknown male person who requested an ambulance at Sugar Dock on Sunday at 1:30pm.

Medics from Garapan Fire Station came upon the Chinese teenager at 1:33pm.

Bystanders stated that the victim was pulled out of the water five minutes prior to the medics’ arrival.

Gersonde said medics noted that the boy’s face was already bluish and showed signs of near drowning.

The boy was conscious with a low oxygen reading so he was given oxygen and rushed to CHC emergency room.

Gersonde said they have no information regarding the boy’s condition as of yesterday.
