Man allegedly involved in fatal hit-and-run posts bail
Esekiel Smith, who allegedly killed a young man in a hit-and-run incident, has completed all the conditions of his release and was scheduled to post his bail last Friday.
The 30-year-old Smith surrendered his passport to the Superior Court during his pretrial conference last Wednesday. The surrendering of his passport was the only condition holding him back from posting bail.
Smith was required to surrender his passport. If he violates any of the court’s conditions, he or his custodians will be required to post a $98,000 unsecured or appearance bond.
Smith, who allegedly hit a man with his car and left him by the side of the road in August, was scheduled to post a $2,000 bail Friday at the Superior Court before he can be released. It was not immediately learned if he did so but unofficial reports said he was going to do so.
Smith’s jury trial is still set for March 11, 2019.
According to Saipan Tribune archives, on Aug. 19, 2018 at approximately 3:37am, a man on a car was heading north when he noticed a man lying on the ground adjacent to the Commonwealth Utility Corp. power plant. He stopped to call the Department of Public Safety. Police reported that the victim had injuries, was unconscious, and was partially lying on the shoulder of the northbound outer lane.
Medics arrived shortly after and rushed the victim to the Commonwealth Health Center where he was pronounced dead at 4:01am.
On Aug. 20, at 2:32pm, Superior Court Associate Judge Teresa Kim-Tenorio set Smith’s bail at $100,000.
