Mail package thief pleads guilty
A man charged in federal court for stealing two Apple iPads and two Apple iPhones from the mail pleaded guilty last week as part of a plea deal.
Randy A. Sablan pleaded guilty to unauthorized mail opening, which carries a maximum penalty of a one-year imprisonment, a $100,000 fine, and a one-year supervised release. He will be sentenced on Feb. 19, 2016.
U.S. District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Ramona V. Manglona vacated the jury trial set for today, Tuesday.
Assistant U.S. attorney Ross Naughton did not object to Sablan’s continued release pending sentencing.
Sablan was accused of opening a piece of mail that was not directed to him on Nov. 19, 2012. A few months later, on April 28, 2013, he opened a package that was addressed to a certain postal box. The package contained two iPhones. The defendant allegedly stole the two iPhones.
The information charged Sablan with two counts of unauthorized mail opening and one count of misuse of postal property. As part of the plea deal, for pleading guilty to one count of unauthorized mail opening, the U.S. government agreed to dismiss the remaining charges.
An indictment was previously filed charging Sablan with mail theft, and two counts of obstruction of mail. The prosecution dismissed the indictment then filed the information.
