Magnitude 5 quake hits near Saipan

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.0 on the Richter scale hit the Marianas island chain at 4:10am on Friday, Aug. 1, 2014, according to the CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

In a notice on Friday, the agency said the temblor was located at latitude 14.8 degrees north and 145.5 degrees east, which is about 27 miles south southwest of Saipan and 8 miles south southeest of Tinian.

No tsunami watch or warning was in effect for the entire CNMI as of this time.

The CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management said it will be monitoring this earthquake and will be issuing bulletins as they become available. (PR)
