Mafnas gets special projects post
Former Department of Corrections commissioner Ramon Mafnas will continue to work for the government, this time as a special assistant for project development.
Press Secretary Ivan Blanco said the appointment means Mafnas will work closely with potential investors coming to the CNMI.
The official said one of the responsibilities of Mafnas is to liaise with investors and guide them through the process of getting permits and licenses necessary to start a business in the Commonwealth.
The position is a newly created government post.
In a brief statement, Mafnas confirmed his appointment, saying he “will continue to serve” in this new capacity. He said there are a number of agencies that investors need to go to, and one of his main responsibilities is to help these companies “navigate” the complex process.
Mafnas was given an office on Capital Hill. He started work last week.
In February, Mafnas’ courtesy resignation as head of the Department of Corrections was accepted by the administration of Gov. Eloy S. Inos.
It was earlier announced that Mafnas will not be appointed to a Cabinet-level position, but will still be part of government.
In a statement after his departure as Corrections chief, Mafnas said: “It is a privilege and honor to serve at the pleasure of past and present governors and lieutenant governors as both co-coordinator of the U.S.-CNMI consent decrees since 2006 and DOC commissioner since 2010.”
“It has always been my desire to promote professional standards, performance and efficiency in all things that I am assigned to carry out and or oversee,” he said.
During the administration of then-governor Benigno R. Fitial, Mafnas served as DOC and Department of Public Safety commissioner.
