When did you last hear students of Eskuelan San Francisco de Borja recite poetry by heart? Only last year, when the school won the junior division of the 11th Annual Valentine N. Sengebau Poetry Competition for the second time in a row.

In preparation for the 12th Annual Valentine N. Sengebau event, parents and guests gathered at As Paris Restaurant on Oct. 17, 2015, to listen, watch, and enjoy the school level 2nd Valentine N. Sengebau Poetry Recital, and musical talent and literary performance.

“Poetry is an accessible and personal art form for all ages to enjoy,” said administrator/principal Carmen H. Atalig. “Congratulations must be given to the students for their participation and dedication to learning their poems, musical number, and dances. And a big thank you to the teachers who assisted in the students’ God-given talents.”

Last year’s 11th Annual Valentine N. Sengebau’s junior division school representative Angelo Lucero and 7th grader Jeremy John Atalig II will represent the school in the 12th annual competition.

“I am excited. I want to bring back the perpetual plaque back to our school,” said Lucero.

“Angelo and I will try our best to defend our title,” said Atalig.

Introduced to the school by the Northern Marianas Humanities Council two years ago, the competition proved to be a success with students scouring poetry anthologies from Sengebau.

“The students learned that poetry doesn’t have to rhyme, and that figurative language can help all styles of writing,” said board chair Edward Maratita Jr. “Congratulations, students, on your participation and for a great performance and a special congratulations goes to our two finalists, Angelo and Jeremy.” (ESFDB)
