Lt. Bill Fitzgerald, supervisor for the Marine Safety Detachment for the past two years, will be bidding farewell to the CNMI as his deployment comes to an end.

In an interview with Fitzgerald Monday, he said that the Marine Safety Detachment for the CNMI under the U.S Coast Guard sector Guam will undergo a turnover.

Fitzgerald and one other MSD staff will be leaving the CNMI and will be turning the position over to a new individual, Lt. Eugene Chong.

When asked about the past two years, Fitzgerald said he grew fond of the CNMI’s warm weather and friendly people.

Fitzgerald will be leaving this Friday and Chong is scheduled to fly in next week or the following week.

Fitzgerald said that in the past years, all the vessels in CNMI that have undergone inspection with the MSD have turned out safe

“We haven’t issued a violation to any of our inspected vessels this past year. The only significant pollution incident was the Grand Mariana. We haven’t had any serious pollution. A few minor damages on some of the boats but no pollution,” he said.

The MSD primarily does vessel inspections including all passenger vessels. MSD also inspects the pre-positioned ships out in the reef and any of the foreign vessels that come in.

Aside from vessel inspections, the MSD also does casualty investigations, pollution response, search and rescues, and port inspections.
