Low pressure area to bring heavy rain showers this weekend
NWS cautions people to be aware of hazardous seas, inclement weather
Tropical Storm Conson turned northeast farther from the Marianas yesterday, but a broad low pressure area west of Saipan is expected to bring heavy showers and thunderstorms over the Marianas this weekend, according to the U.S. National Weather Service Guam.
As of 7pm yesterday, Conson’s center was 220 miles south of Minami Tori Shima or 680 miles northeast of Saipan or 805 miles northeast of Guam.
As of 1pm yesterday, Conson’s center was 250 miles south of Minami Tori Shima or 635 miles northeast of Saipan or 760 miles northeast of Guam.
NWS’ forecast is that Conson will move further north or away from Saipan and Guam today, Friday.
Packing maximum sustained winds at 40 miles per hour, the tropical storm maintained its current intensity yesterday then resume strengthening Saturday night.
Meanwhile, NWS said the broad area of low pressure centered 400 miles west of Saipan yesterday is showing signs of development.
NWS said converging west and southwest monsoon winds associated with this low pressure are producing scattered showers and thunderstorms from south of the Mariana Islands northwestward to well north of Palau.
People planning any outdoor and marine activities over the next few days are cautioned to be aware of hazardous seas and inclement weather.
Building west swell will cause seas across the Marianas, especially in the western waters, to rise over the next several days.
NWS noted that latest buoy readings from Tanapag, Saipan indicate seas of 7 to 8 feet.
