LITERARY NOOK
Love Poem for Valentine’s Day
My inspiration for this sonnet is a 16th century madrigal by English composer Francis Pilkington (ca. 1570 -1638). Madrigals were popular secular songs in the Renaissance and early Baroque eras. Their lyrics were based on poetry and performed acapella without any accompaniment.
“Why should I grieve that she disdains my love,
Or seek for love, since love’s a grief ?”
—Francis Pilkington
Why Should I Grieve
Why should I grieve and sing sad song blues
If love brings grief regardless of who I choose
In all compass directions wherever wind blows
We had hot torrid summers and then she froze
He snatched her right up underneath my nose
Took my beauty and left me without relief
Love’s thorn pricks, blood flows from its rose
Must my love simply acquiesce to that thief
Lover come back to me, I will not fret or frown
About past events or any and all of our mistakes
Your touch, your kiss stops me from feeling down
With love from heaven above we shall partake
So why should I grieve and always seem to lose
My new love perspective stands inside your shoes.
