Long weekends as Austerity Mondays kick off

Austerity Mondays for the CNMI government will start this Oct. 5, making today, Friday, the last Austerity Friday, according to Gov. Ralph DLG Torres yesterday.
In his memorandum to all department and activity heads, Torres said that, pursuant to Public Law 21-35—the Appropriations Act (budget) that was just signed yesterday—Mondays are designated as “austerity days” for the government, including its branches, departments, autonomous agencies, public corporations, political subdivisions, and instrumentality that elect to implement austerity days to operate within their budget allocations.
The Legislature found that due to the time difference between the CNMI and the U.S. mainland, it would be more conducive for government employees to work on Fridays instead of Mondays because the federal government is closed on Mondays in the CNMI.
Torres noted that Oct. 12, a Monday, is Commonwealth Cultural Day, a paid legal holiday in the CNMI.
“Therefore, the austerity day of that specific week will be observed on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2020,” the governor said.
He said for fiscal year 2021, if a legal holiday in the CNMI falls on a Monday, the austerity will be observed on the Tuesday of that week.
